It is very sad to hear of the death of Professor Sean Freyne today, former Professor of Theology at Trinity College Dublin. Besides being a internationally renowned Historical Jesus scholar, historian of religion, and GAA fan, in my experience he was a benevolent supporter of students. His legacy at Trinity was not only the combination of Theology and Biblical Studies departments (though that has ended), but also, more importantly, several generations of students. He was supportive of the TCD postgrads’ first attempts to organize a biblical studies conference even after retirement (GIA) and was one of the honorary founding patrons for the new academic society founded by some of the same (Hekhal: The Irish Society for the Study of the Ancient Near East).

May he rest in peace.
