Happy festival of St Brendan the Navigator to all my fellow travelers. (Today is the 1440th anniversary of his death).
A real historical monk and missionary, St Brendan is best known for a legendary seven year voyage in search of the Garden of Eden.
St Brendan has been taken up as a patron saint of sailors and of travelers. The US Naval Academy has a stained glass window depicting St Brendan. The image here is a sculpture of Brendan in Bantry, Co. Cork (photo by the solitary walker).
Brendan is an appropriate symbol for both literal and metaphorical travelers.
